Opportunities
Almost every day of the week, tenants in Marion County face the loss of their homes without legal representation. ILS staffs help desks at several of the Eviction Courts. Prior and again during the proceedings, Tenants will be asked if they wish to consult with an attorney before appearing in Court for the eviction hearing. Those that answer yes will be directed to a room to talk to the attorney. ILS staff will help with intake to verify income and that this will be a brief advice clinic. Using prepared questions, the attorney will discuss any possible procedural or substantive defenses to the eviction. ILS staff will be available to join the discussion or answer questions. The attorney will then prepare a checklist for the client to use to go back into court to either present their case or ask for a continuance. We will also provide a list of Housing Resources to the clients.
