Assistance to veterans is a way to give back to those who have sacrificed much for our country. While some veterans’ issues are unique, many are legal problems common to low-income populations.

Our pro bono attorneys serve veterans in one of two ways:  First, ILS conducts monthly Legal Clinics at the Roudebush VA Medical Center the second Tuesday of each month. This is a walk-in clinic where attorneys meet with clients in an ask-a-lawyer format. ILS has staff on-site to assist with military-specific issues and there are also VA social workers, and Veterans Service Officers present to assist with non-legal problems. Pro-bono lawyers can “pair-up” to assist clients with the full support of experienced ILS attorneys. This is a low-stress introduction to the ask-a-lawyer format for attorneys who would like to get involved.

We also have a panel of trained attorneys who assist with discharge upgrades. These cases involve a veteran who was unjustly discharged with something other than “Honorable.”  This can preclude the veteran from receiving valuable benefits which their service has earned. ILS does the initial screening to ensure that there is a valid claim and assists in getting the needed documents. The attorney then assists in marshalling the evidence and completing and filing the application. Training and support are provided throughout the representation.
