IRS Dirty Dozen: Trouble Paying Taxes? Don’t go to an OIC Mill

Date: June 21, 2022

The annual IRS Dirty Dozen list warns taxpayers about popular scams for the current
tax year. #6 on the list is Offer-in-Compromise (OIC) Mills. These “OIC Mills” promise to
settle taxes owed to the IRS for “pennies on the dollar.” Many of these companies
charge nonrefundable fees, sometimes in the thousands. In reality, many taxpayers
could get the same offer from the IRS to settle their debts through other avenues.
Qualifying for an Offer-In Compromise with the IRS has strict income vs expenses
requirements. Owing money to the IRS can be an intimidating and complicated process
for individuals. Get free help from a Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) at (812) 339-7668.
